You know what’s not part of a K-pop idol’s job description? Falling off a collapsing stage in the middle of a concert.
Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened to BABYMONSTER during their concert in Taiwan on June 23. The group was performing when part of the stage suddenly caved in, sending members Ruka and Pharita tumbling into the gap. Fan videos captured the terrifying moment as staff rushed to help, and the music stopped immediately while the other members looked on in shock.
YG Entertainment confirmed that Ruka and Pharita were taken to the hospital for examination. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries reported, and the two were able to return to their accommodation to rest after check-ups. Still, it’s hard to understate how frightening and dangerous the situation was.
The cause of the collapse is under investigation, with many fans pointing fingers at poor stage management and safety checks, and honestly, can you blame them? If you’re hosting a concert, you might want to ensure the literal floor your artists are dancing on isn’t going to open up and swallow them mid-performance.
Despite the scare, YG assured fans that BABYMONSTER will adjust their schedule depending on the members’ recovery status, prioritizing health first. Meanwhile, fans have flooded social media demanding accountability from the event organizers for the structural failure, and rightfully so.
Because idols already risk enough with endless rehearsals, strict schedules, and relentless pressure. Falling through a collapsing stage during a concert should never be part of the job.
Hopefully, this is a wake-up call for organizers everywhere: safety first, excitement second. No performance is worth risking lives, and the last thing K-pop needs is another preventable on-stage accident.
Wishing Ruka and Pharita a full recovery—and that every concert moving forward comes with a fully secured stage, checked twice, with screws tightened for dear life.
